Welcome to J-1 Visa Exchanges. We are a Department of State designated sponsor of Trainee, Intern and Teacher programs. The Orion J-1 Visa Information System is the application that we use to accept and process J-1 visa applications.

If you are a prospective Intern, Trainee or Teacher and already have a confirmed offer from a U.S. host employer , then you can create an account in Orion. After you create your Orion account, you can register your application and upload various documents. Please make sure that you have all documents ready before you create your Orion account.

For Interns and Trainees, we require the following documents:

  • Resume
  • Passport biographic page
  • Employer letter of reference (Trainee only)
  • Copy of college transcripts
  • Diploma

For Teachers, we require the following documents:

  • Resume
  • Passport biographic page
  • Background check report (recent and issued by Justice Department, National Police or similar national government agency)
  • Employer letter of reference or Employment verification (showing that you are currently teaching and that you have at least years full time teaching experience)
  • Letter of reference from a colleague (attesting to that teacher's good reputation, character and teaching skills – must have colleague’s name and signature)
  • Letter of reference from a supervisor (attesting to that teacher's good reputation, character and teaching skills – must have supervisor’s name and signature)
  • School cultural activity letter (letter from your current school stating their willingness to work with the exchange teacher on cross-cultural activities – must be signed by the head of school and must include their telephone number and email address)
  • Diploma
  • Foreign Education Evaluation report (must be from official credential evaluation agency such as those listed on www.naces.org)
  • U.S. school offer letter (must include at minimum teaching position, start date and salary)
Do not create an Orion account until you have obtained all documents listed above.

Reminder to all host organization contacts

You must provide continuous and on-site training and supervision to trainees and interns by experienced and knowledgeable staff. Trainees/ Interns cannot be left “on their own”

Trainees/ Interns cannot displace full- or part-time or temporary or permanent American workers or serve to fill a labor need. You cannot schedule them based on business needs

You cannot place trainees or interns in unskilled or casual labor positions; for a complete list of unskilled positions, see 22 CFR Appendix E at http://goo.gl/yXz4SX
